Education Views: Eco diary helps keep it green

An international award-winning sustainability initiative is coming to Queensland schools in their Year of Environmental Sustainability.

The Green Lane Diary is a free curriculum-linked education program for students aged 10-12 years being championed by Green Cross Australia.

The Department of Education and Training is a Gold Sponsor of the Green Lane Diary.

The original project was launched by Green Cross Japan 11 years ago and more than 600,000 Japanese students have participated since 1999, culminating in a 2009 national-level 'Energy Globe Award'.

Queensland schools have been invited to pilot the Green Lane Diary initiative in Australia before it becomes available in other states in future years.

Students in Queensland will have access to free hardcopy resources including an information booklet and student diary, and the resources will be available to all online at the Green Lane Diary website

'By keeping a diary of their ecological activities and discoveries every day in Term 3, young people can broaden their horizons and help to make their homes, schools and communities more sustainable,' said Green Lane Australia spokesperson Mara Bun.

To get involved schools must register by emailing contact details, school name and number of students to info@greencrossaustralia.org.
