Green Cross Australia's Projects

Green Cross empowers people to respond to environmental change. Our programs build community resilience and provide active education for a new generation of environmental leaders. Green Cross catalyses change working with partners and web based tools that are connecting with audiences around the world.

Environmental Education: Green Lane Diary

The Green Lane Diary is a curriculum linked education program designed by environmental educators to help 8-13 year old children become aware of the stresses our planet confronts and how sustainable living can make a difference. We are also focusing on green schools and helping schools in Ghana to access clean water.

Harden Up - Protecting Queensland

As the rain settles in across Queensland, it is a good time to prepare for severe weather with our interactive planning tool.

Witness King Tides

What will the Queensland coast look like in the future? This summer 2012 king tide events will be recorded by our coastal communities to demonstrate possible future scenarios.

Victorian Bushfire Response: Build It Back Green VIC

Green Cross Australia is supporting bushfire affected communities in Victoria with a interactive and comprehensive web portal to encourage sustainable rebuilding and community recovery choices that embrace eco-resilience.

Future Sparks - our clean energy show and tell

Harnessing the kinetic energy of a soccer ball to power a light bulb or charge a mobile phone is just one of the amazing projects Australian teachers and students can access through the Future Sparks - our clean energy show and tell program.

Youth Emergency Volunteering: Extreme Weather Heroes

Australia’s dry terrain and massive coastline expose us to severe storms, floods and fires. Extreme Weather Heroes inspires young people to get involved in emergency volunteering to step up, get skilled and get prepared.

Green disaster rebuilding goes global: Build It Back Green

Build It Back Green (BIBG) is a new global movement which recognises that scientific predictions of more intense severe weather are becoming a reality. Each major event offers the opportunity to break the greenhouse emissions cycle if we rebuild with a reduced carbon footprint.

Queensland Flood & Cyclone Response: Build It Back Green QLD

Green Cross Australia is catalysing a partnership determined to build back a greener, more resilient Queensland in the aftermath of the 2011 floods and cyclones.

Prepare for La Nina: Buckle down for 2011

Climate experts predicted that this storm season would be a bad one, so GCA hit the road across regional QLD from Miles to Roma to Goondiwindi with a range of Storm Season Community Forums supported by Suncorp Insurance, Volunteering QLD, CSIRO & Building Codes Queensland. Find our storm season preparation and sustainable post-storm recovery tips here.

Democracy after disasters

A natural disaster occurs. People and communities are affected, often in the worst imaginable ways. But what happens next and how are citizens of disaster-affected areas engaged in decision-making regarding rebuilding their communities and recovering their lives?

Humanitarian Climate Adaptation: Climate Resilience

Warmer oceans and hotter temperatures mean our Pacific and Timor-Leste neighbors confront water shortages, rising tides, shifting rainfall patterns and the risk of more intense severe weather events. Green Cross Australia is influencing Australia’s overseas aid program to build community resilience and protect fragile ecosystems as the planet warms.

International Right to Water

"The right of every human being to safe drinking water and basic sanitation should be recognized and realized." Mikhail Gorbachev, was featured in The New York Times July 16 2010, as the United Nations prepares for a historic vote.

UN Emergency Response: AGEE

GCA recently participated in the AGEE which brings together disaster managers and environmentalists from developed and developing countries to exchange ideas and experiences on global environmental emergency response issues.

Democracy in Action: The National People's Assembly 2008

Green Cross led a citizen’s conference in 2008 to shape Australia’s overseas aid program because our nation needs to address the humanitarian consequences of climate change impacts such as warming oceans, rising seas and more intense severe weather events. Citizens can and should shape national climate change policy and with excellent independent briefing, democracy is a powerful policy development agent. Learn more about the issues, process and results.

The Dalai Lama in Australia

If Green Cross is able to inspire one single Australian leader towards a shift in personal values - we will be that much closer to achieving our mission of a secure and sustainable future. Green Cross Australia formed a partnership with Dalai Lama in Australia to support our first Values Leadership event in what will become an annual series.
